With the acquisition of Nielsen Business Media Brasil announced last April, NrnbergMesse, one of the world's leading exhibition companies and organizers of business events, primarily in Europe, expanded its portfolio of trade fairs in Brazil with BioFach and ExpoSustentat. These events, which are thrilling the organic products and green economy markets in Latin America, will be held in October 28-30, 2009, at Transamerica Expo Center, in So Paulo.
Also present in China and North America, the acquisition was part of the German company's strategy of expanding operations on a global basis, which intends to bring up its foreign revenues from current 5 million Euros to 50 million Euros by 2020. The opening of subsidiaries in key economic regions, the launch of new events and the acquisition of companies are part of the global expansion plan. "Nielsen Business Media Brasil was chosen because of the synergy with the events we organize; with this effort, we are opening opportunities to operate in Latin America," highlights Bernd A. Diederichs, CEO of NrnbergMesse. According to the executive, the group plans to invest some 100 million Euros in its international growth.
The company's objective is to hold, in other countries, events similar to those it currently organizes in the event center in Nuremberg, Germany, and become the leader in several markets, among which, technology for beverages, small pets, veterinary, glasses, and sustainability. In addition to Germany, today the group organizes events in China, Japan, Russia, North America, India, and Brazil.
With a volume of transactions of more than 150 million Euros, the NrnbergMesse Group is one among the world's top 20 organizers of trade shows and one among the top ten ones in Europe. Its portfolio includes more than 100 international trade shows and congresses in Nuremberg, Germany, and all over the world. Yearly, the events organized by the NrnbergMesse Group gather more than 27,000 exhibitors (37% international ones), 895,000 visitors (20% international ones) and 395,000 consumers. Today, the group employs 300 employees and plans to grow even more. The companies that are part of the NrnbergMesse Group are: NrnbergMesse, Nrnberg Global Fairs, NrnbergMesse China, NrnbergMesse North America and recently, NrnbergMesse Brasil.
The company is headed by Ligia Amorim, general director of NrnbergMesse Brasil. The executive, who joined the company in 2006, has an experience of more than 12 years in the market of business events and trade fairs, apart from the entire infrastructure and personnel. In addition to the established trade fairs for the pet, glasses, bathroom and kitchen, food, beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and lab analyses sectors, the portfolio of events now includes BioFach - International Trade Fair for Organic Products - and ExpoSustentat - International Trade Fair for Sustainability in Latin America. These trade fairs are co-organized by Planeta Orgnico, which developed these concepts in Brazil and now has NrnbergMesse Brasil's entire support.
"We have positive expectations regarding the partnership with NrnbergMesse Brasil. In addition to expanding the space already won by BioFach Amrica Latina and ExpoSutentat, I am optimistic about the possibility of carrying out new projects together with the organization. For 2009, we expect to focus on several segments related to organic products and sustainability, from food to cosmetics, highlighting the added value of products that use biodiversity feedstock. By the way, the partnership between the biodiversity and cosmetics will be highlighted in the events, where there will be a roundtable about the topic with the presence of domestic and foreign speakers," pointed out Maria Beatriz Martins Costa, director of Planeta Orgnico.
The trade shows organized by NrnbergMesse Brasil has welcomed important foreign attendees. In their last editions, Pet South America 2009 and Analitica Latin America 2009 were attended by visitors and exhibitors from more than 50 countries. "With the new format, we will be able to reinforce our operations in Latin America. Today, 42% of visitors come from this region, what shows the importance of our events for Mercosur," explains Ligia Amorim. The executive states that from now on, there will be further possibilities of international interaction and presence in events here in Brazil, as well as in other locations around the globe, organized by NrnbergMesse, what benefits Brazilian companies that seek to win the international market.
The German Minister of Economy and Technology, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, has been in Brazil recently, during the 27th Brazil-Germany Economic Meeting, which counted with the presence of President Lula. At that time, the minister stated that Brazil is Germany's major commercial partner in Latin America, accounting for 40% of the German trade with the region. He also showed to be pleased with the fact that Brazil is home to other German company - NrnbergMesse.
Growth regardless the crisis
The international financial crisis has not been affecting Brazil so severely as it has been affecting other countries. "Brazil was one of the last countries to be affected by the crisis and it can now be the first one to surpass it," according to a report prepared by German Trade & Invest, the foreign trade and inward investment agency of the Federal Republic of Germany. The economy and consumers' behavior have been developing well for the last five years. The private consumption was the major highlight in terms of economic growth in 2008, being responsible for more than 60% of the Brazilian Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the most recent assessment. The higher income and easier credit have been driving consumption. The amount spent by Brazilians in food and beverages increased 100% and 125%, respectively, in the period from 2002 to 2007. Cosmetic and hygiene items sales grew by 70%. And the Brazilian government has been taking the necessary actions to assure that 2009 is also a year of growth, the report states.
Based on the mentioned landscape, NrnbergMesse Brasil is getting ready for its next event, BioFach and ExpoSustentat. The trade fairs already have 75% of their areas occupied, are expecting to receive 330 exhibitors and are likely to see a growth of 10-20% in their total event spaces. The choice of So Paulo to be home to the event was mainly due to the fact that the State is responsible for 40% of the domestic commercial revenues in 2008.
